Maybe keep me alive too, but i’m looking to reduce the gap between total costs and income for www.fromoldbooks.org.

A lot of people like this site. It has also resulted in quite a few improvements to the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), which i used to clean up scanned images.

The high resolution images are scanned with a museum-quality archival scanner i bought years ago with an inheritance, and cleaned up with GIMP.

I give the Web resolution images away for free, and also give away the high resolution images to worthy causes, but charge for commercial use.

Despite all the ads on the page, it now brings in about $30 a month, plus maybe another $20 on average in donations, and costs about $150 (Canadian dollars) a month to run, including the domain name and the hosting and not including my time. Probably i’ll try to move to cheaper hosting, and i’m trying to build up other sources such as stock sites, tee-shirts, socks, what-have-you, and even selling off some of the books on eBay.

But a lot of people like the site, and i do get quite a few small donations (that’s where the $20 comes from).
